Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari on Monday said Odisha was chosen as the host state because of its “globally recognized milestones in disaster preparedness, effective cyclone management and early warning systems”.

Pujari said representatives from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, UAE, Ethiopia, Iran and Indonesia will attend the event in Puri.

He said Prime Minister Mohan Sharan Majhi will attend the inauguration ceremony on June 4.

India chaired the first technical meeting of the BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group, held virtually from April 29-30, which brought together member states to promote a common agenda on disaster resilience.

“The first in-person technical meeting of the BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group under India’s BRICS presidency is scheduled to be held from June 3 to 5, 2026 in Puri,” Pujari said.

He said delegates, policy makers and disaster management experts from BRICS members and partner countries will participate.

The minister added that deliberations will focus on sustainable financing for disaster risk reduction, resilient infrastructure, proactive response, and integrating traditional knowledge into disaster response strategies.

The BRICS group, which initially consisted of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, expanded in 2024 to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates, with Indonesia joining in 2025.

It has emerged as an influential grouping because it brings together the world’s 11 major emerging economies, representing about 49.5 percent of the world’s population, about 40 percent of global GDP and about 26 percent of global trade.
