The recent non-cooperation notice issued against Ranveer Singh by the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has once again brought the ban and restrictions on the industry up for public discussion.
Such behavior is not limited to Bollywood. Film industries across South India have also witnessed similar controversies involving actors and technicians over the years.
Shane Nigam frequently clashes with the production bodies
Malayalam actor Shane Nigam has had multiple run-ins with industry organizations during his career. Complaints have been made from producers regarding delays along with scheduling concerns and alleged losses associated with film projects.
This is said to have led to interventions by bodies like the Kerala Film Producers Association (KFPA), FEFKA and AMMA as reported by the Indian Express.
In 2019, controversies surrounding projects including ‘Veyil’ and ‘Qurbani’ starring Shane Nigam escalated. Producers claimed that some actions negatively affected production and led to financial setbacks.New complaints emerged from within the Malayalam film industry in 2023 and Sheen once again faced restrictions alongside actor Srinath Bhasi.
Reports from News Minute say that both actors have been accused of misconduct and drug use.Discussions among stakeholders ultimately paved the way for a settlement. After negotiations and mutual understanding, the restrictions were lifted, allowing the actor to resume work on upcoming projects.
Vadivelu’s long-standing feud in Kollywood
Few industrial conflicts in Tamil cinema have lasted as long as the stand-off between comedian and actor Vadivelu.
The controversy centered around the ambitious historical comedy “Imsai Arasan 24am Pulikesi”.The project faced repeated setbacks during production which led to disagreements between the actor and the filmmakers. Differences over casting decisions along with costume design and production requirements led to growing tensions, TOI reported. The producers claimed that the stalled project caused huge financial losses.
Complaints were reportedly lodged with the Tamil Film Producers Council and the Nadigar Sangam. The matter became one of the biggest controversies in Kollywood and the resulting restrictions kept Vadivelu away from major projects for several years. Now Vadivelu is back in Tollywood with amazing projects like ‘Maamannan’, ‘Maareesan’ and many more.
Srinath Pasi’s controversial ban
Actor Sreenath Bhasi also faced a dark phase in 2023 after producers’ organizations in Kerala announced a non-cooperation directive against the ‘Home’ actor.Reportedly, the producers lodged a complaint that Srinath Bhasi was in the habit of signing multiple projects simultaneously and also allotted the same shooting dates for different projects. This led to major shooting clashes as well as financial losses for the producers, as reported by The New Indian Express. The actor had already been embroiled in a controversy after an incident during the promotional activities of the film ‘Chattambi’ in 2022 where he verbally abused an anchor.Discussions were held with the actor and he was advised to address the concerns raised by the producers. The restrictions imposed on him were withdrawn after Srinath Bassi apologized.
Thilakan’s stance against industrial power groups
One of the most talked about ban controversies in Malayalam cinema involves legendary actor Thilakan. The popular performer was known for his outspoken nature, publicly criticizing influential organizations and questioning what he saw as an unfair concentration of power within the industry.Thilakan repeatedly claimed that a powerful group influenced career opportunities and casting decisions, even before the Hema Commission pointed this out several years later. The veteran actor claimed that these differences led to him being sidelined from several projects.Speaking to Lucoz about artistic freedom and the idea of a ban, Thilakan said: “An artist can never be banned. Neither can his talent. Art is like the ocean. It has no boundaries.”
