IMPHAL: 5,406 sensitive, violent and communal posts have been identified, and about 3,200 have been deleted since June 2023, a month after the ethnic violence erupted, while 187 pages and accounts have been blocked, Manipur Director General of Police Rajeev Singh said on Monday.

He said the measure was taken in coordination with the state Information Technology Department and the Centre’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
Speaking at a program in which 477 police vehicles, including armored cars and two-wheelers, were flagged down by Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh at the Manipur 1st Rifles Range, the Director General of Police said: “Since June 1, 2023, a total of 5,406 sensitive, violent and communal websites have been identified, and around 3,200 websites have been removed in coordination with the state IT department and MeitY. 187 pages have also been blocked. “And reckon.”
The DGP said preventing, monitoring and verifying fake news and misinformation is essential to ensure public order.
“The social media reach of Manipur Police, which clears doubts and issues clarifications, has also expanded significantly. Its Facebook followers have increased to 79,000 and X followers to 27,000,” the officer said.
“When I took over as Director General of Police, Manipur in June 2023, the state was going through one of the most difficult and challenging times in its history due to inter-communal violence,” he said.
The situation requires not only an immediate field response, but also a long-term institutional strengthening of the police force. A comprehensive plan to modernize the police has been prepared and sent to the state government towards the end of 2023, the DGP said.
On October 31, 2025, he said that the Ministry of Interior had approved an amount $196.61 crore to enhance security, infrastructure, mobility, forensics and communication systems and also for smart policing initiatives.
“The Central government’s support has significantly enhanced the operational capacity of Manipur Police and enhanced our ability to effectively respond to emerging security challenges. The vehicles raised today will improve mobility, response time and logistical support across hill and valley areas,” the DGP said.
Of the newly purchased vehicles, 54 per cent will be sent to hill areas and the rest will be in the valley and with police technical units, he said.
He said that Manipur Police, realizing the importance of capacity building, entered into a memorandum of understanding with the National Security Guard in June 2025 for specialized training and capacity enhancement.
He added, “To combat extortion, an integrated anti-extortion cell was established, and so far more than 1,000 extortionists have been arrested in the Hills and Valleys districts.”
He said that during operations against extortion and anti-social elements, there were instances where protests were held, roads were blocked and security forces were obstructed from performing their lawful duties.
The Director General of Public Security said such actions are harmful to society because extortionists and anti-social elements pose obstacles to peace, progress, education and the future of the youth.
He added: “I call on the public to provide maximum cooperation to the security forces.”
More than 260 people have died and thousands have been made homeless in ethnic violence between the Metis in the Imphal Valley and the neighboring Kukis in the hills of Manipur since May 2023.
