At the end of his speech, Keaton’s composure broke as he dedicated the award to his family. “Looking at it, this is for my nephew Michael and my sister Pam,” he said, trying to hold back tears. “I lost Michael…and it hurts. Thank you to my sister, Pam.” It was a raw, simple moment that said it all without having to say much at all.
Michael Keaton on why ‘Dopesick’ is so important off-screen
Earlier in his speech, Keaton talked about the responsibility that comes with being part of a project like “Dopesick.”
“I have a job where I can be part of a production that can generate thought, conversation and actual change,” he said. “Who’s going to get this job? Seriously? How lucky am I that good can come from something I’m doing just because I’m learning to be an actor? There’s tremendous injustice in the world. In Dopesick, when you talk about addiction, the way to treat the problem is to accept that you have a problem.”
Not our country.
The whole world.Economically, racially, socially and financially. There is huge inequality in the world. Just there. There is fair, and there is unfair. “There’s not much space between them.”
Michael Keaton explains why joining ‘Dopesick’ wasn’t an easy decision
In an interview with USA Today in October 2021, Keaton admitted that signing on to the show was a difficult choice given his personal connection to the subject matter. “If the writing wasn’t that good and the quality of the people involved wasn’t that high, I can’t guarantee I would have done it, just based on losing Michael,” he said. The show’s director later revealed that Keaton was the only actor they ever considered for the role, and once he understood the project, there was no looking back.
