Miley Cyrus became emotional when she was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Friday.
“To my family, my future family, my father, my mother, my siblings, my friends, and my collaborators, thank you for loving and supporting not only the choices I make, but my fears, and then facing them with me,” Cyrus said. “Today is something I will never forget and will always cherish. I love you all so much, thank you.”
Cyrus was joined by her mother Tish Cyrus, sister Brandi Cyrus, and fiancé Max Morando at the event. Although her father, musician Billy Ray Cyrus, was not present at the ceremony, after a falling out between them in recent years, Miley Cyrus gave her father a sweet tribute in her speech.
“My dad used to say that a skyscraper starts with a jackhammer — and so does a star on the Walk of Fame, by the way — and it’s not about strength, it’s about repetition,” she said. “What I feel about this star is that it is an accumulation of devotion.”
Speaking about her legacy, she continued, “A star is not something you win like a season game. It’s not something you can chase or collect. It’s not something you make the next record for, and then carry around like a trophy.” [p.m.]This moment will pass, and it will return to being a busy street full of unique people and people discovering here for the first time, our city that we all share and love so much. And after today, I commit to continuing the cycle of creation, because this is what I truly live for. I hope that what I leave behind will continue to touch the hearts of generations to come, generations that I will no longer be here to experience. I hope it awakens something raw, imperfect, exciting, magical, and exhilarating in the times you need it.
Miley Cyrus’s Walk of Fame honor comes just under a year after the release of her last album beautyWhich includes the song “Walk of Fame”. The visual album also included a video titled “Walk of Fame” which featured Cyrus tumbling down a star-covered sidewalk.
That song, co-written by Alabama Shakes frontman Brittany Howard, who also sings and plays guitar on the track, ends with Howard singing “You’ll live forever.”
“Even though I love the lyric, I’m not going to do that [live forever] “This is what creates the urgency that lights a fire in my heart, my life, my art, and my desire to break down the walls of whatever boxes we have been tricked into believing exist,” she said.
Anya Taylor-Joy and Donatella Versace also paid tribute to Miley Cyrus at the Walk of Fame ceremony. Taylor-Joy remembered seeing Cyrus for the first time J-14 magazine.
“I knew this was going to be huge,” Taylor-Joy said. “What I didn’t know [is that] “Huge” would hardly begin to cover it.
She added: “She challenged the rules, rewrote them and, from time to time, set them on fire in a teddy bear costume. Miley, my darling, you’ve always been a star and now you’re a star in every sense of the word.”
For those who might want to visit Miley Cyrus’ spot on the Walk of Fame, Versace added, “Just remember, if any of you cross Miley’s star, do it with attitude.”
Disagreements have recently erupted between Miley Cyrus and her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, after Miley’s parents divorced in 2022. While Tish Cyrus married Dominic Purcell in November of that year, Billy Ray Cyrus got engaged to Firerose, an Australian musician 27 years younger than him, and the couple separated in May of 2024.
The “Achy Breaky Heart” singer is now dating Elizabeth Hurley. Miley and Billy Ray Cyrus unfollowed each other on Instagram and failed to thank him when she won Record of the Year at the 2024 Grammy Awards.
However, last May the two appeared to have reconciled, as Miley Cyrus joined Billy Ray Cyrus to celebrate her brother Bryson Cyrus’ 31st birthday.
“My dad and I have had our challenges over the years. Now, in my 30s, family is my priority above all else. I feel at peace knowing bridges have been built and time has contributed to so much healing. Grateful for the good health and love that flows through my family,” she wrote on her Instagram Stories shortly afterward.
Later that month, she opened up to New York Times About the dispute with her father, while confirming that they are no longer separated and saying that she is trying “to be more sympathetic to him.” [her] “Fathers.”
“I think timing is everything. As I get older, I respect my parents as individuals rather than as parents, because my mom really loved my dad her whole life, and I think being married to someone who works in the music industry and not being involved in it is really difficult,” she said. “So I think I took on some of my mother’s pain as my own because it hurt her more than it hurt me as an adult, and so I take on a lot of her pain.”
“But now that my mother loves my stepfather, who I absolutely adore, and now that he’s my father, I see him finding happiness too — I can love them as individuals rather than as a parental pairing,” she added.
Miley Cyrus also referenced her father when she learned last year that she would receive a Walk of Fame star.
“When I first came to LA from Nashville as a young girl, my family was staying at a hotel on Hollywood Blvd, and I would go for late-night walks with my dad when no one recognized him,” she wrote on Instagram at the time, alongside a clip from the music video for “Walk of Fame.” “We used to have the gift shops to ourselves and buy replica Oscars and Marilyn Monroe merchandise. To now be standing on this legendary street, surrounded by the icons that have inspired me, feels like a dream. This moment will live forever. Thank you to everyone in my life who made it possible. I am grateful to share this star with you.”
