Explaining the series finale of The Boys: Homelander vs Butcher and what happens to the boys

SPOILER ALERT: This article contains major spoilers for the final season and series finale of The Boys. Reader discretion is advised if you haven’t watched the show yet.“The Boys,” which has become one of the most popular and trending shows of the past couple of years, has officially come to an end.

With the final episode airing on the streaming platform, fans had to deal with a lot of emotions.

What happens in the fifth season of The Boys, the final episode?

The final episode of “The Boys” saga, titled “Blood and Bone,” brings a whirlwind of emotions around the events of the show. One thing to note is that unlike the comics by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, which the show was initially inspired by, it had a very different ending than the ending of the live-action show. The series ended with the inevitable showdown between Butcher and Homelander, which was the main aspect that the previous seven episodes had been slowly leading up to.

As Homelander prepares to announce himself as the second coming of God from the Oval Office, the boys hatch a plan to infiltrate him and formally confront him. With Kimiko’s ability to unleash superpowers on anyone, the team officially strips Homelander of his powers, and Butcher stabs him directly in the head with a rod. As they celebrate, Butcher tries to talk to Ryan, but the latter refuses, says he’s still a bad person, and leaves.

The Butcher heads home to meet Terror, only to find that his dog has died.

Butcher is pushed to the brink and decides to use the Super Virus

Coming to the brink, Butcher decided it was time to use the Supers Virus, also known as the Godulkin Virus. As he heads to Vought Tower in search of the virus, Hughie realizes what he is about to do and tries to go and stop him. For the unscientific, the virus can kill anyone who has Compound V in their system, while normal humans would never be affected by it.Although Hughie tries to talk him out of it, Butcher denies the whole thing and the two fight in the Seven Conference Room. As Butcher overpowers Huey and is about to shoot him with the virus, he hesitantly thinks of his brother. This moment is enough for Hughie to finally draw his gun and shoot and kill the Butcher. As he took his last breath, he thanked Hughie for shooting him and said he would never have stopped, lying down at his last moment to save him.

The boys go their separate ways

As the gang officially buries Beecher’s body and puts an end to the horrific events, they all decide to go their own way. When MM gets married, Ryan joins the party as his best man. Kimiko, on the other hand, continues to live her life, seeing all the places she and Frenchie always talked about before he died. The ending also shows Hughie and Annie having a baby and opening a store that Starlighter uses as a front to operate as a store. The series officially ends after many bloody and horrific battles. However, many have revealed that the series finale is very different, and in terms of the show and comic books, less bloody and gory than depicted in Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s comic books. The comic ends with Black Noir killing Homelander, with Butcher killing Black Noir, Mother’s Milk, Kimiko, and Frenchie, though the part about Hughie being the one who ended his life was picked up in the series, just in a less grim setting.
