Jonah Hill appeared as a surprise guest on SiriusXM’s Live broadcast without intelligence Saturday night at the Hollywood Palladium for an appearance that marked her first long-form (and very public) solo interview in years. He was so stoked to be there.
“I’ve been gone for a while, so I’m kind of coming back, and I’m excited because I got serious for a while and I wasn’t happy,” Hill explained to . unintelligent The trio had a quiet few years before returning to the spotlight with their latest Apple TV movie outcome. “Then I got my family and became happy, and now all I want to do is be funny again. That’s why I said yes[to being on the show].” [tobeingonunintelligent]. I, like, want to be funny in front of a crowd of people and that would be great.
Hill seemed to have a great time with him unintelligent Hosts Jason Bateman (a close friend who described him as a mentor), Will Arnett and Sean Hayes. The over-an-hour conversation covered almost his entire career, starting with his first film role in David O. Russell I heart Huckabees To the turns in Judd Apatow I knocked and Too bad Opposite Oscar nominee Michael Cera Moneyball Opposite Brad Pitt and Martin Scorsese The Wolf of Wall Street Opposite Leonardo DiCaprio.
Before they got into the details, Hill joked, “People think I’m an illegitimate child.” He said he and his wife, Olivia Millar, were “just laughing” about the feeling that day. “My dad is a fucking accountant,” he said, quipping about his father, Richard Feldstein, who worked as a high-profile manager for bands like Guns N’ Roses and Maroon 5.
But he credited the real-life non-Nibo kid, Jake Hoffman, for helping him land a role in Russell’s film. I heart Huckabeeswhich starred Jake’s father, Dustin Hoffman. “Jake’s dad, Dustin, used to say, ‘You should be a comedian,’” Hill recalls. “I was just trying to be funny all the time. So Dustin said, “I’m doing this movie. I got you an audition.”
The audition turned into a real part, and Hill found himself on the comedy set alongside heavyweights like Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman, Lily Tomlin, Jude Law, Mark Wahlberg, Naomi Watts, Isabelle Huppert, Jean Smart and others.
“What was it like being on set?” Bateman asked Hill about his freshman outing in what became a highly publicized production after leaked audio emerged revealing an intense struggle between Russell and Tomlin as the director berated her in front of the crew. She said later Hollywood Reporter that she was “stoic in her suffering” and that it was eventually dissipated.
To answer Bateman’s question, Hill said, “David O was crazy at the time.” But he was quick to back up the statement with a string of praise.
“He was wild and I’m like buddies with him. He’s great. A very nice guy. But at that moment in life, and I had my moments, trust me, he was wild, my friend. He would yell at Lily Tomlin. He’s on the Internet and shit. And he’ll talk about it. He’s great. He’s one of the best directors of all time. I mean Flirting with disasters and Three kingshe’s a goat too. “It’s crazy.”
Not only did Russell yell at Tomlin, but Hill claimed that on his first day on set, he witnessed a fight between the director and a high-ranking member of his creative team. “Everyone is yelling at each other,” he said. “The first time I walked on set, he and KK Barrett, the production designer, were joking about wrestling and then it turned into an actual fight. It was like a joke that turned into a fight, and these guys were fighting and they were setting up my first scene to act. I was like, ‘Hollywood is too tight.'”
For his part, Russell once told IndieWire that the production was a “party” except for the explosive fight day, “but then that was the day we remember.” He added: “I became a better director because of it, but it was painful. It was six years of losing my way a little bit.”
To bring the story full circle, Hill said he made a commitment at the time that if he found himself in the director’s chair, he would hire Barrett. And he did. “He shot my new movie, outcome“Full circle, 20 years later. Greatest production designer ever,” Hill said.
In hill outcomehe also had the awkward moment of hiring Scorsese to make a cameo in what marked a reunion after the two worked together on a Scorsese film. The Wolf of Wall Street. “He came very prepared. Honestly, the whole thing was pretty dope,” Hill said of making an appearance in the Hollywood satire, in which he played an actor for Keanu Reeves’ character. “He came to film and I was directing him. It was so numbing. It was like giving birth.” [I was like]”That’s too trippy.”
He said that as an actor you “go through withdrawal” from directing Scorsese “because the poor, unfortunate directors you have to work with next cannot compare, no matter how wonderful and prepared and dazzling they are.”
Russell has a new movie coming out by the end of the year, MaddenStarring Nicolas Cage, Christian Bale, Shane Gillies, Will Ferrell, Sienna Miller and Kathryn Hahn. Hale has a new movie out this summer, to cutWhich he wrote, directed and starred opposite Kristen Wiig.
