The Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge has introduced stricter rules for distance learning across Abu Dhabi, making live online classes and mandatory attendance tracking mandatory for all schools. The Department of Education and Knowledge said the updated framework is designed to align distance education with in-person classroom standards, ensuring consistent teaching quality, student discipline and academic results across the emirate.
Online class attendance rules in Abu Dhabi
Under the new framework, students’ attendance during online classes is no longer flexible and must be officially recorded, just like physical attendance in classrooms.Schools required now:
- Track attendance for each scheduled online session
- Ensure students’ attendance and active participation
- Follow up on absentees and maintain appropriate records
Students are expected to:
- Log in on time for all scheduled classes
- Keep cameras where they need to be
- Interacting with teachers during lessons
This step ensures that distance learning receives the same seriousness as classroom teaching, reducing passive or irregular participation.
Live lessons are mandatory
One of the most important features of the updated rules is the requirement that live, real-time teaching be the primary method of instruction. The Department of Education and Knowledge has directed schools to prioritize interactive live classrooms, where students can interact directly with teachers, ask questions and receive instant feedback. This approach aims to improve understanding and keep students actively involved.Recorded lessons are still allowed, but only as supplemental material.
It cannot replace direct teaching, marking a clear shift away from previously used passive learning methods.
School responsibilities under the rules of the Department of Education and Knowledge
The new framework imposes stronger accountability on schools and teachers to ensure high-quality online education.Schools must implement structured timetables, monitor lesson delivery and ensure that teaching remains interactive and effective. At the same time, teachers are expected to conduct interactive sessions, regularly evaluate students’ progress and provide continuous feedback. The Department of Education and Knowledge also highlighted the importance of maintaining a balanced learning environment, including managing screen time and supporting student well-being.
Abu Dhabi Digital Learning Strategy 2026
The stricter regulations reflect Abu Dhabi’s broader push to create a long-term, regulated digital education model rather than rely on temporary distance learning solutions.According to the Department of Education and Knowledge, the updated rules aim to improve learning outcomes, enhance student engagement and ensure that distance education meets the same standards as classroom teaching. The move signals a more disciplined and structured approach to online education in Abu Dhabi, with clear expectations for both students and teachers.
