Nepal and India have signed an agreement on mutual legal assistance to cooperate in criminal investigations and legal proceedings, the Ministry of Law and Justice said here.
The Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Agreement was signed on Tuesday during a ceremony held at the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
The agreement will enable the two countries to cooperate in criminal investigations and legal procedures, according to a statement issued by the ministry.
It aims to enhance cooperation in the investigation, prosecution and judicial processes related to criminal cases.
The ministry stated that “the agreement aims to facilitate the exchange of legal assistance between the two countries in criminal matters, including the collection of evidence, the exchange of information, and coordination between the competent authorities during investigations and judicial procedures.”
“The agreement will serve as a milestone in reducing financial crimes in Nepal as well as making criminal investigations, charges and judicial proceedings more effective,” she added.
He added that this “will also help combat money laundering and financial investment in terrorist activities.”
Joint Secretary Binod Kumar Bhattarai signed the agreement on behalf of the Nepalese government, while Indian Ambassador to Nepal Naveen Srivastava signed on behalf of the Indian government.
Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anil Kumar Sinha, ministry officials and representatives of the Ministry of External Affairs were also present on the occasion.
