241 roads in Delhi to be renovated by the end of 2026; Wall to wall rugs to enhance lifespan: cm

New Delhi: Delhi government will renovate 400 km of road stretch by the end of the year, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Tuesday. According to officials, more than 241 major roads have been identified for redevelopment under the government’s comprehensive road improvement project, at a total cost of Rs 802 crore. “This initiative is an important step towards making the capital safer, more organized and future-ready. All the roads will be developed as per the wall-to-wall carpet model to ensure that the construction work is not partial, but is carried out across the entire width and with uniform quality,” Gupta said. Each road will undergo technical evaluation of the subgrade, necessary reinforcement and appropriate drainage arrangements in accordance with the specified standards.

This will help reduce waterlogging during the monsoon season and ensure road safety in the long run, she added. The Prime Minister said that unlike the common practice of repairing only the central portion of roads or isolated potholes, which lead to deterioration after a short period, under the new system, the entire stretches will be uniformly reinforced from edge to edge, enhancing durability and lifespan. “The project is targeted to be completed by the end of the year. The work will be carried out in phases to minimize traffic disruption and public nuisance. The completely flat and sealed surface across the entire width will also reduce dust and air pollution as damaged roads generate loose soil and fine particles that become airborne due to vehicular movement,” Gupta said. The total cost of the project is Rs 802.18 crore. Of this, Rs 643.36 crore will be funded through the Central Road Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) and the remaining Rs 158.82 crore will be spent by the Delhi government.
