The investigation into the high-profile Lamborghini crash in Kanpur took a controversial turn when the police revealed that CCTV footage shows Shivam Mishrathe son of a prominent tobacconist, was driving the car at the time of the incident. According to the police, CCTV footage, eyewitness accounts and other evidence confirm that Shivam was driving the car at the time of the accident.

Shivam’s lawyer Dharmendra Singh Dharmu claimed that the car was being driven by a driver at the time of the incident. The claim contradicted police claims that CCTV footage, eyewitness accounts and other evidence put the businessman’s son Shivam Mishra behind the wheel of the car.

Police Commissioner Raghubir Lal confirmed that Shivam Mishra was named as an accused after updating the FIR initially registered against an unidentified person based on the evidence gathered during the investigation. He said the investigation proved that Mishra was driving the car at the time of the accident. “We will soon file a chargesheet against Mishra. There will be no relaxation,” he added.

What did the CCTV footage reveal?Two videos – one CCTV clip and another recorded by onlookers – have surfaced, allegedly showing members of the Mishra family’s security team following the Lamborghini, opening the door and pulling Shivam out of the driver’s seat after the accident. Police described the footage as a crucial piece of evidence in the case.

Tobacco trader KK Mishra arrived at Gowaltali police station on Tuesday after being summoned, amid allegations that his security personnel had prevented investigators from entering his residence for the past two days. During his two-hour stay at the station, Mishra said he would cooperate with the investigation but claimed that his son was undergoing treatment in Delhi and would join the investigation if his condition improved.

Mishra insisted that his son was not driving. He told mediapersons that Shivam suddenly felt sick and started sleeping, asked the driver to apply the brakes, after which a tempo rammed the car. He claimed that the security personnel broke the window and pulled out first the driver, followed by Shivam.

Mishra alleged that only the footage of Shivam getting out of the car was aired, while the part showing the driver getting out was not shown. Responding to police claims that Shivam was driving, he said: “The driver was driving…my son was being framed.”

Lawyer Dharmendra Singh, representing the Mishra family, said the driver, Mohan Lal, filed an affidavit in court that he was driving the vehicle. According to the affidavit, Shivam felt dizzy and rammed a Tempo Lamborghini, after which Shivam was dragged out by breaking the window. Singh also said that Shivam was in Delhi for treatment.

The incident took place on Sunday afternoon when a speeding Lamborghini, bearing a Delhi registration number, veered onto the footpath of VIP Road, hitting pedestrians and vehicles. Taufiq Ahmed, a resident of Chamonganj, sustained serious injuries on his leg, two motorcyclists named Vishal and Sonu Tripathi were also injured. An autorickshaw and a motorcycle parked on the side of the road were damaged.
