There is nothing significant in the poll-bound Tamil Nadu Union Budget 2026-2027 that will grab people’s attention, a noted political commentator said on Sunday. Political analyst Sumanth Raman draws a parallel between Bihar, which was the focus of last year’s budget; and Tamil Nadu, where elections are due by April this year.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who presented the Union Budget 2026-27 in the Lok Sabha today, made some announcements and key proposals for Tamil Nadu.
Some of the announcements for the state include a rare earth mineral corridor, a high-speed rail corridor connecting Chennai and a coconut promotion project.
Speaking on High-Speed Rail, Sumanth Raman said the announcement was nothing new and would not attract people from southern states.
What Tamil Nadu Gets in Budget 2026Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced seven high-speed rail corridors between the cities, including Chennai-Bengaluru and Hyderabad-Chennai.
Sitharaman said the corridors would act as “growth connectors” and help promote an environmentally sustainable passenger system.

The budget proposes coconut production schemes to strengthen farm incomes and diversify agricultural production in major coconut-producing states, including Tamil Nadu.
Focus on Bihar in Budget 2025Bihar featured prominently in the Union Budget 2025-2026, with Nirmala Sitharaman announcing several projects including a new Makhana Board, expansion of the Greenfield Airport and Patna Airport.

Sitharaman mentioned a National Institute of Food Technology, Processing and Innovation, which aims to provide a platform for the whole of Eastern India, increase farmers’ income and create skills and employment opportunities for the youth.
He also said that greenfield airports in Bihar would be facilitated to meet future needs besides the expansion of Patna airport, which has now been completed.
