YouTuber Markiplier has finally shared when fans will be able to watch his horror film Iron Lung at home after its successful run in theaters. Speaking during a panel at Cannes hosted by Deadline, the filmmaker revealed that the film will be released exclusively on YouTube on May 31.
Fans will be able to purchase and watch the film directly on the platform. Markiplier explained that YouTube seemed to be the perfect place for the release as it had been his home for many years. The film first hit theaters on January 30 and quickly became a surprise hit. Despite having an announced budget of only $4 million, Iron Lung earned over $50 million worldwide. Much of the promotion came from Markiplier’s online fan base rather than a large Hollywood-style advertising campaign.
The film’s success also started conversations about how online creators could release films without relying on major studios.
YouTube user Markiplier says YouTube is the right place for Iron Lung
During the session, Markiplier said he has always felt loyal to YouTube because it helped build his career. According to him, launching the iron lung there makes perfect sense. Fans who missed the film’s theatrical release will now get the chance to watch it from home just a few months after its theatrical release.
Iron Lung is based on the indie horror game created by David Szymanski. The story takes place in a dark future after a terrible event called… “Quiet ecstasy.” The film revolves around a prisoner trapped inside an old submarine while exploring a giant ocean made of blood. The film mixes scary moments with psychological horror as the character slowly becomes more frightened during the mission.Markiplier did more than just act in the film. He also worked as a writer, director and producer. Even after the film’s huge success, Markiplier said he does not plan to move on to another film immediately. He joked that he wants to spend more time with his wife first before starting another big project sometime next year.
