'Women need to shut up!': Christian nationalist duo spark widespread outrage with shocking viral rant

The digital landscape has been erupted into a storm of controversy after a video went viral on X (formerly Twitter). Joel Webon, a Texas pastor who leads Right Response Ministries, and co-host Wesley Todd are facing severe backlash over statements targeting the role of women in society and the church.

The clip, highlighted by Right Wing Watch, depicts the duo arguing that female leadership is an “insult to God.”Todd claimed in the video that in God’s Word and in the nature He created, God said “women should be silent.” “They need to stay silent, they don’t get to make decisions, they can’t judge because they do stupid things,” Todd said. Webon agreed with his co-host, claiming that this may sound harsh, mean, and not Christian, but the phrase is actually “very biblical and pleasing to the Lord.”

“Your daughter needs silence in your house when she’s talking to her father? No, that’s not what we’re talking about,” he said, specifically pointing out arenas in which women should not speak. In the public arena, in government civil office, in the church, in positions of authority, and when it comes to making decisions in the family, with men as the “federal head” of the family, Webon said, “Sure, Wes is right, women, shut up!” He also called women speaking out “literally an insult to God!”

Many netizens started calling out Todd and Weiboon for their online statements.

“But I thought right-wing men supported and loved women? It seemed like all they wanted was control. Total control.” one user wrote. “They seem to have forgotten that God appointed Queen Esther to lead the army. It’s time to study.” Another said.Another claimed: “When Joel and his brothers get tired of dehumanizing black people, they turn to dehumanizing women.”The clip was from a recent episode of their podcast titled “Homosexuals, Jezebeles, and Why England Became Catholic” in which they criticized the appointment of Dame Sarah Mullally as Archbishop of Canterbury, calling it contrary to the light of “Scripture and nature.”Todd and Webbon cited the examples of “pro-abortion” Mullally and an “Indian” Anglican priest who recommended the use of sex toys for pleasure to base their claims that women should remain silent. Webun also added that for a woman to find a good man, she must be “calm and peaceful and stop competing with men.”

In another video broadcast on their YouTube channel NXR Studios, the duo claimed that female pastors are not allowed into the church because it is the “word of God,” and they followed it because they were conservative and women were “incapable” of doing it well. Webun even stated that he would change the voting system to a more “representative” system where male siblings, fathers and husbands vote for the larger family. Some of the videos have shocking titles like “A Godly Woman Wears What Her Husband Wants” and “The Age of the Boss is Over.”However, this is not an isolated incident for the duo. Previously, in February 2025, Todd got into hot water for claiming that pregnant women shouldn’t be allowed to work in office, calling it “stupid.” While Webbon has made multiple remarks similar to this before in his videos.
