Why was DLive closed? Twitch rivals YouTube and Kick collapse after eight years, leaving creators scratching their heads (Image via Getty)
DLive has officially announced its closure after trying to compete with Twitch and YouTube with its own live streaming platform. The company announced the news on April 7, 2026 in which it confirmed that it would be closing its operations immediately and permanently.
Creators on the platform now face restrictions because they cannot stream, earn money, or manage subscription services. The platform that provided users with blockchain and cryptocurrency rewards had difficulties expanding its user base because established platforms like Kick, Twitch, and YouTube already dominated the market. The platform received negative feedback from users which led to a decline in audience numbers.
The company is now asking users to withdraw their digital currencies, end their subscriptions, and save their content before the complete shutdown, which will occur in eight years.
DLive and Felix “PewDiePie” Kjellberg’s partnership once gave the platform global attention
DLive saw its biggest milestone of 2019 when popular YouTuber Felix Kjellberg joined and promoted the platform. His support brought huge attention and helped DLive grow rapidly for a short time. The platform stood out because it used blockchain technology through BitTorrent Inc.
The platform used cryptocurrency to reward its creators and viewers instead of using traditional advertising methods.
At the time, people found this concept exciting because it represented a new idea.
However, things did not stay strong. After BitTorrent Inc. acquired On DLive in 2019, the platform tried to enhance crypto-based features further. But most ordinary users have not fully adopted this system. Many creators also found it difficult to grow compared to larger platforms.Over time, DLive began to fall behind. It lacked robust discovery tools, stable income options, and a large viewer base. While Twitch and YouTube continued to improve their systems, DLive couldn’t keep up with their pace.
Direct shutdown The statement asks users to withdraw coins and save content before a complete shutdown
In its official statement, DLive clearly told users what to do next. The company said:“Thank you for your continued support of DLive. We regret to inform you that the platform will be discontinued. The top-up function, including subscriptions, has been discontinued effective immediately.”
This means that users can no longer add funds or support creators through subscriptions. The company also shared that more updates on the shutdown process will be available soon. He said:“We will continue to share updates regarding the platform liquidation timeline to ensure you stay informed throughout this transition period.”Meanwhile, DLive asked creators to take quick action. They must withdraw their remaining coins, cancel any active subscriptions, and download their videos before access expires. In its final message, the team thanked its community:“All the staff would like to thank you again for your support over the years. Thank you all for the wonderful memories, streams and unwavering support over the years. We will remember this for a lifetime.”It’s also important to note that DLive has faced controversy in the past. In 2021, a report by The Forward described the platform as a space where extremist creators are active. This affected its reputation and growth. Now, with strong competition and past issues, DLive has come to an end.
