The shocking coup of May 13, 2026 Alex MurdoMurder convictions in America have reignited fascination with one of America’s most famous true crime cases. On that day, the South Carolina Supreme Court overturned his conviction in the 2021 murder of his wife, Margaret “Maggie” MurdaughAnd son, peeA new trial was ordered after evidence of jury tampering and misconduct by the court clerk was uncovered.

“Although we recognize the time, money and effort involved in this lengthy trial, we have no choice but to reverse and deny Murdaugh’s motion for a new trial due to Hill’s unfavorable outside influences on the jury and remand for a new trial,” the justices announced that day.

This legal move left many across the country asking the same question again: Why do prosecutors believe Murdoch killed his family in the first place?

Where is Alex Murdo today?

Despite the overturned convictions, Murdaugh will not be released from prison anytime soon, if at all. The disgraced former lawyer remains behind bars serving long sentences linked to his wide-ranging financial crimes, including fraud and money laundering.

Murdaugh was originally sentenced to two consecutive life sentences after being convicted in March 2023 of killing Maggie and Paul at the family’s South Carolina home in June 2021. Prosecutors alleged he fatally shot his wife and son near the kennels on the property.

Now, however, the South Carolina Supreme Court has upheld the alleged jury interference of the Colleton County Clerk Becky Hill Prejudicing the results of the original trial.

Why did Alex Murdaugh allegedly kill his wife and son?

Although originally convicted of murder, Murdo has consistently denied killing Maggie and Paul. Furthermore, there was no confirmed motive other than plaintiffs’ theory throughout the trial.

During the original legal proceedings, prosecutors said Murdoch killed his wife and son to distract everyone from the mounting financial pressures and increasing scrutiny surrounding his alleged theft. At the time of their deaths, he was facing years of financial misconduct.

The prosecution further claimed that the murders were an attempt to gain sympathy and ultimately delay investigations into his finances. Evidence presented during the trial included cellphone data and video footage of Murdoch’s placement near the dog kennels shortly before the killings occurred.

During his testimony, Murdaugh admitted that he lied to investigators about where he was the night of the murder. However, he insisted that he never killed his wife or son.

What does overturning Alex Murdaugh’s conviction mean for him?

Overturned convictions are not indicators of Murdaugh’s innocence. The ruling means that the court decided that he did not receive a fair trial under constitutional standards. The South Carolina Supreme Court ordered a new trial.

The reversal of conditions centers around allegations that former court clerk Hill improperly influenced jurors during Murdoch’s 2023 trial. The South Carolina Supreme Court said Hill’s actions created “improper outside influences” that prejudiced the jury pool against Murdoch.

At press time, Murdaugh remains jailed on his financial convictions as attorneys prepare for what could become another high-profile courtroom battle.
