Who is James Roscoe? Britain's deputy ambassador to the United States suddenly leaves his post in Washington

James Roscoe, one of Britain’s most senior diplomats in the United States, has resigned from his position as Deputy Chief of Mission at the British Embassy in the US capital.State Department officials confirmed that Roscoe had “left his position” but did not provide any further details about his departure, the BBC reported.Roscoe also served as Chargé d’Affaires to the United States between September 2025 and February 2026, temporarily leading the Embassy during a key period in UK-US diplomatic relations.Before moving to Washington, Roscoe represented the UK at the UN General Assembly and later held senior communications roles within the UK Government, including positions in the Cabinet Office and the Exit Department.He is also known for having served as Communications Secretary to Elizabeth II between 2013 and 2016.Earlier in his career, Roscoe worked within 10 Downing Street as chief press officer for former UK Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.During his time in Washington, Roscoe played a role in major diplomatic events, including arrangements associated with former US President Donald Trump’s state visit to the United Kingdom and Charles III’s recent visit to the United States.His previous diplomatic assignments also included positions associated with the United Nations, Sierra Leone and Iraq.
