'I wasn't making it easy for them': Trump recounts tense moments after shooting at White House dinner

Chaotic moments erupted at the Washington Hilton after gunfire erupted one floor above the basement ballroom hosting the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, prompting a rapid security response.US President Donald Trump later described how he wanted to see what was happening when Secret Service agents escorted him out of the scene on Saturday evening after a gunman opened fire. When asked about his concerns after hearing the gunfire, Trump said he was “not worried.” “I understand life. We live in a crazy world,” he said. The US President said his curiosity to see the situation firsthand likely slowed down Secret Service efforts to quickly move him to a safe location.“I wanted to see what was happening. I wasn’t making it that easy for them. I wanted to see what was happening. And by then we were starting to realize that maybe it was a bad problem, a different kind of problem, a bad problem – and different from what would be normal noise from the dance floor,” he said.“I was surrounded by wonderful people. I probably made them act a little slower. I said, ‘Wait a minute, wait a minute,'” the president recalled, adding that Secret Service agents repeatedly urged him to get on the ground as they escorted him off the stage.

“I started walking. They said, ‘Please get down, please get down.’ “I got down and the first lady got down too,” Trump said.A California man has been accused of crashing into a dinner party attended by President Donald Trump, in what officials described as a shocking attack at a Washington hotel.Administration officials said the suspect in Saturday night’s incident appeared to target Trump and other prominent figures at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, marking the third attempt on the president’s life in the past two years. After a short exchange of gunfire with the officers, the suspect was arrested at the scene.Trump later posted photos showing the suspect handcuffed on the hotel’s carpeted floor, lying face down and without a shirt.Trump said in a hastily arranged late-night news conference at the White House that he initially mistook the sound of a tray falling before realizing it was the sound of gunfire. He added that he hopes the annual gala, hosted by the White House Correspondents’ Association, will be rescheduled within a month, and described the hotel venue as a facility that is “not particularly safe,” as questions grow about the president’s safety protocols.
