What caused JFK Jr.’s plane crash?

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) ruled that JFK Jr.’s plane crashed due to possible pilot error as a result of “spatial disorientation.”

“Crossing large bodies of water at night in single-engine aircraft can be dangerous, not only from the point of view of landing (ditch) in the water, but also because with little or no illumination, the horizon blends with the water, and in this case, depth perception and steering become difficult,” the NTSB flight report said. “During poor visibility conditions over the water, the horizon will become fuzzy, and may result in loss of orientation. Even on clear nights, stars may be reflected in the surface of the water, which can appear as a continuous array of lights, making it difficult to determine the horizon.”

What does spatial disorientation mean?

According to the FAA’s practical test standards through the NTSB, spatial disorientation is “the inability to accurately determine the aircraft’s position or motion relative to the Earth’s surface.”
