Spanish MP Irene Moreno sings her own satirical song Happy Birthday to Trump
Spanish Member of the European Parliament, Irene Montero, went viral after she sang her satirical song “Happy Birthday” to US President Donald Trump, ending with the phrase “Happy Birthday, Mr. Genocide,” during a debate on Middle East politics.Montero, the country’s former equality minister and representative of Spain’s left-wing Podemos party, used her time to criticize EU foreign policy, confronting EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.
At the conclusion of her remarks, Montero switched to English to sing the tune, drawing immediate comparisons online to Marilyn Monroe’s famous performance on President John F. Kennedy’s 1962 birthday, but she replaced the standard lyrics with “Mr. Genocide.”Monteiro strongly wondered what Europe should celebrate regarding the modern situation in the Middle East. She demanded to know whether the European Union had actually prevented the destruction.“Did we stop the illegal aggression by the United States and Israel against Iran? Did we cut ties with Israel? Did we stop the occupation of Lebanon? No, we cannot celebrate any of that,” she said. The letter targeted Trump following public celebrations of his 80th birthday on Sunday, June 14.
Montero mocked his birthday celebrations as a “Roman Empire” style spectacle. The viral moment quickly sparked intense debate on social media. Supporters hailed it as a bold and necessary critique of international foreign policy. Critics dismissed the show as empty political theatre, noting that she delivered the speech to a largely empty parliamentary hall.Callas did not respond verbally to the song, and maintained focus on her notes throughout the performance.
