The United States and Bolivia are coordinating to reinstate their ambassadors “as soon as possible,” after nearly two decades without top diplomatic representatives in either country, Foreign Minister Fernando Aramaio said. AFP Thursday (February 5, 2026).
Neither country has hosted an embassy since then-President Evo Morales expelled the US ambassador to Bolivia in 2008, accusing him of plotting against his leftist government.
The White House retaliated by expelling the Bolivian ambassador.
“We have resolved the issue of reinstatement of ambassadors,” Mr Aramayo said AFPfollowing a meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington on Wednesday (February 4, 2026).
He said that there is a plan to finalize this work as soon as possible.
Since taking office in November, the government of center-right President Rodrigo Paz has sought rapprochement with the United States.
The leftist administrations of Mr Morales and Mr Luis Arce, who have ruled the country for the past two decades, have seen a wedge between Bolivia and Western countries, including the United States.
