The United flight was diverted and passengers were evacuated via emergency slides in Pittsburgh
A United Airlines plane bound for New York was forced to make an emergency diversion to Pittsburgh International Airport on Saturday after the crew reported a potential security threat on board.According to The Guardian, Flight 2092 took off from Chicago O’Hare International Airport and was headed to LaGuardia Airport when it was rerouted in mid-air. Passengers were evacuated using emergency slides after landing, and videos shared online showed the plane centered on the runway with the slides deployed.
Bomb scare caused by ‘whistling noise’
Initial concerns stemmed from a “potential security issue,” as US aviation authorities described it. Crew members detected a “whistling noise” during the flight, prompting them to treat the situation as a potential bomb threat.“We’re going to have to start treating this bomb as a potential bomb… It’s a beeping noise, cascading, one beep per second,” one crew member was heard saying in cockpit audio.
The Boeing 737 plane, carrying 159 passengers and six crew members, landed safely without any injuries reported.
FBI, bomb squad sweeps the planes
Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, responded to the scene along with local police and bomb disposal teams.
Explosive ordnance disposal units and police dogs conducted a comprehensive search of the plane, passengers and luggage. The authorities later confirmed that the combing operation showed “negative results,” indicating that no explosive device was found.Officials then released the plane, and airport operations continued without interruption.Following the incident, passengers were rebooked on alternative flights to New York. Emergency services, including fire trucks and ambulances, were present during the evacuation but stopped after the situation was resolved.
