Rory McIlroy praises President Trump and guests at the White House banquet / Photo: X
It was supposed to be a discreet evening at the White House, a state dinner hosted by Donald Trump for King Charles III and Queen Camilla, with the usual cadence of prepared remarks and polite applause, until the president stepped away from his remarks midway through his speech and turned the room’s attention toward one guest in particular: Rory McIlroy. McIlroy, seated among dozens of high-profile attendees, arrived in Washington just weeks after his Masters win that transcended golf’s limits, a performance at Augusta that moved him into the lead before being held back by Scottie Scheffler, Cameron Young and Justin Rose, eventually closing it out to collect his second green jacket and, in doing so, becoming only the fourth player to win back-to-back Masters titles.

Trump actually reacted publicly to the win in the hours after it happened, posting on Truth Social: “Congratulations to Rory McIlroy on another great tournament, the Masters! He performed tremendously under intense pressure, something that few people would even be able to even consider doing. With each year, Rory becomes more and more of a legend! I look forward to watching him compete in two weeks at Doral.”
But on Tuesday night, it became clear he wanted to say it again, this time in person, and in front of a room that wasn’t expecting an interruption.
“Where’s Rory McIlroy?”
Midway through his speech, Trump paused and departed from the prepared flow of the speech, veering toward a point about flexibility before suddenly clarifying it. “The whole world has been elevated by this distinct and special character that we share. This unstoppable audacity, this indomitable courage.
It really is, it can’t be beat. “Speaking of which, where is Rory McIlroy? Can you stand up Rory, will you, please?” “That was indomitable courage. That was very good of Rory. I don’t know if it helped him talk about how great the speech was… but I had to interrupt my speech because I watched that guy win a tournament that was tough.” “Congratulations, very proud of you.”
A standing ovation ensued in the hall as McIlroy stood to acknowledge the tribute, although the moment had a slightly turbulent side, the kind that comes when a formal setup slips briefly into something unscripted and personal, with the golfer accepting praise before the evening returns to its planned course.
Doral, absences, different kind of schedule
The White House moment also comes with a separate subplot. Despite Trump’s general enthusiasm to see McIlroy compete on his course, the Northern Irishman will not be part of the field at the upcoming Cadillac Championship, which returns to the Trump National Doral, specifically the Blue Monster design, for the 2026 edition scheduled for April 29-May 3. The venue is located near McIlroy’s home in Jupiter, Florida, about 90 miles away, a short drive, and a course he knows well, having played several rounds there with Trump in the past, according to his former agent Andrew “Chubby” Chandler.
The tournament itself is one of the PGA Tour’s eight signature events, staged without the 36-hole cut, yet McIlroy opted to skip it, opting instead to step away briefly after the Masters. He is expected to return the following week at the Truist Championship, scheduled for May 7-10 at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, a course that has historically suited him, before the next major tournament on the calendar, the PGA Championship beginning May 14.
