President Donald Trump on Thursday reinforced his long-standing criticism of American elections, claiming in a Truth Social post that “America’s elections are rigged, stolen and a laughing stock around the world.”

He outlined proposals including mandatory voter ID, proof of US citizenship for registration and restrictions on mail-in ballots.
The White House said on Thursday that US President Donald Trump has urged Congress to quickly approve the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (Preservation) Act, which would establish stricter conditions for voter eligibility and registration.

What is Trump proposing?Trump appealed to Republicans to pass the Save America Act bill, a set of electoral changes he claims will “fix” the voting system. “We’re either going to fix them, or we won’t have a country,” Trump wrote.
In the Truth Social post, he wrote that all voters must show government-issued ID and proof of US citizenship to register and vote. White House press secretary Carolyn Levitt said at Thursday’s news conference that the bill “contains very common sense policies and proposals that 89% of our country agrees with.”
The call for action is similar to Trump’s previous executive actions. In March 2025, Trump signed an executive order aimed at tightening election rules. The order prohibits foreign nationals from interfering in US elections and expands voter citizenship verification.
In the post, Trump also said there should be “no mail-in ballots (except for illness, disability, military or travel!).”

SAVE ACT: The Democrat ResponseThe SAVE Act is Trump’s attempt to “nationalize” elections before the midterms. In what he said was a necessary “nationalization” of the voting process to combat corrupt state election processes, Trump called on Republicans to “take over” the polls in at least 15 unspecified precincts.
Countering Trump’s call for Republicans to pass the SAVE Act, US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer earlier said Senate Democrats would vote against “any bill that has it.”
“I want to be very clear: The conservation act died on arrival in the Senate,” Schumer said.
The 2026 midterm elections are scheduled for November 3 and will determine all 435 House seats and 33 Senate seats.
