The latest archaeological discovery, made in northern Israel, comes from the astonishing discovery of a gemstone by a 12-year-old boy, who found it while participating in an excavation project in Korazim National Park.
The relic gemstone has been identified as a very rare Niccolo gemstone dating back 1,500 years to the Roman or Byzantine era. It is speculated that the gemstone may have been part of a piece of jewelry that would shed light on the craftsmanship of ancient jewelry. Some areas of research of interest to the new discovery include Biblical archeology, ancient gemstones, Roman jewellery, Byzantine artefacts, Korazim archeology, Galilean history, and New Testament archeology.
How a 12-year-old discovered a rare 1,500-year-old gemstone in Korazim National Park
It was discovered during a community excavation program organized in Korazim National Park in the Upper Galilee region of Israel, by 12-year-old Alon Horowitz. These excavations are carried out with the help of archaeologists and scientists working alongside local heritage agencies and universities. According to officials, the gemstone is a Niccolo stone, which is actually a garnet stone that is distinguished by its appearance and favored by the Romans and Byzantines for jewelry.
The stone dates back to between the first and sixth centuries AD.Finding such precious items is rare since gemstones were considered highly valuable and precious items. In fact, they will be passed down to family members in future generations. It gives archaeologists an opportunity to study the use of personal jewelry in the ancient world of the Near East.
Corazim and its connection with the history of the Bible
Korazim, also known as Chorazin, is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in the Galilee region. “From everything that is known archaeologically, it appears that Chorazin is one of the places that was founded due to the migration of Jews to the Galilee region,” says Zeev Yavin of the Israel Antiquities Authority. The Jewish settlement dating back to ancient times is referred to in the Bible as one of the cities criticized by Jesus for refusing to accept his teachings. Today, Korazim preserves traces of an active Jewish community, which included a synagogue, baths, houses and farm buildings.According to the official website of the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, Korazim is one of the best preserved ancient Jewish villages and is located on the edge of the Sea of Galilee.
Artifacts found during archaeological excavations at the site include various coins, pottery shards, glass products, and agricultural products.
What the discovery reveals about ancient life in Galilee
According to archaeologists, finds as small as gems provide insight into the lives of the people who inhabited ancient cities. Jewelry was often associated with social status, business relationships, and culture. The discovery of a Roman or Byzantine-era gemstone at Korazim indicates the region’s links to the extensive Mediterranean trade network, demonstrating links between this community and wider economic development.Speaking to Israel National News, Dr. Dror Ben-Yosef, a well-known archaeologist and heritage officer for the northern region of the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, said: “Finding a precious stone that was supposed to be used in jewelry is something unique and interesting in the context of archaeological excavations in the Land of Israel. We conduct educational excavations in national parks and heritage sites, which, besides being scientific research, is an essential educational pillar aimed at establishing a personal connection between young people and our common past.”
“General archeology programs are equally important as well. Public participation excavations allow community members, including children, to join in the excavation process themselves. As stated by the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, such projects are beneficial for preserving cultural heritage and promoting community engagement in archaeology and history.
The importance of this archaeological discovery
Although the stone itself does not look very large, its importance cannot be underestimated. In fact, any item found in Korazim contributes to the understanding of how people lived at that time. Helping historians, archaeologists, and biblical scholars learn about the life, trade, and social interactions that occurred at one of the most important historical sites of all time. The discovery of the Niccolò gemstone could serve as a reminder that sometimes the most interesting archaeological finds can turn up in unexpected places, even from a 12-year-old boy.
