The White House on Friday (February 6, 2026) US and India have released a joint statement On February 13, 2025, President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed their commitment to negotiations towards a comprehensive bilateral trade agreement, he said on the framework of the Interim Trade Agreement between the two countries.

“The United States and India will expeditiously implement this framework and work towards finalizing an interim agreement with a view to concluding a mutually beneficial BTA with a roadmap agreed upon in terms of reference,” the joint statement said.

“India will eliminate or reduce tariffs on a wide range of US industrial goods and US food and agricultural products, including dry distillers grains (DDGs), red sorghum for animal feed, tree nuts, fresh and processed fruits, soybean oil, wine and spirits and additional products,” the statement said.

“The United States and India are committed to providing each other with preferential market access in their respective sectors of interest on an ongoing basis,” the statement said.

The US imposes an 18% reciprocal tariff on Indian goods, cut from the previous 25%. Separately, Mr. Trump issued an executive order repealing 25% additional tariffs on India’s purchases of Russian oil, saying India committed to stop importing Russian oil and buy more US energy products. The order warned that tariffs would be reimposed if India “resumes” Russian oil imports.

“India has committed to stop importing oil directly or indirectly from the Russian Federation, represents that it will buy United States energy products from the United States, and has recently committed to a framework with the United States to expand Defense cooperation in the next 10 years,” Mr. Trump said in his order.

“If the Secretary of Commerce finds that India has directly or indirectly resumed importing oil from the Russian Federation, the Secretary of State, the Secretary of the Treasury, the Secretary of Commerce, the Secretary of Homeland Security, the United States Trade Representative, the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, the Assistant to the President for Economic Policy, and the President and Assistant to the President for Manufacturing, I will take additional measures with respect to India, including whether to reimpose an additional 25 percent ad valorem tariff on imports of articles from India. Meanwhile, a joint statement has been issued Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal’s statement on Thursday (February 5, 2026) India and the US will finalize and sign a joint statement on the trade deal “within the next 4 to 5 days”.
