According to the Panettiere family’s public statement, Janssen died of cardiomegaly, also known as cardiomegaly.
“Although it offers little consolation, the coroner reported that Janssen’s sudden death was due to cardiomegaly (enlarged heart) along with aortic valve complications,” the statement read.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, cardiomegaly is a condition that stresses the heart. Anyone living with this has a larger heart than is considered normal, and the condition can be temporary or permanent. An enlarged heart has trouble pumping blood efficiently and can therefore cause other complications, including heart failure or stroke.
According to the site, the common cause of an enlarged heart is coronary heart disease. However, it is unclear whether Janssen has ever been diagnosed with this condition. Other causes of this condition include arrhythmia, cardiomyopathy, heart disease, high blood pressure and many more.
An enlarged heart can be diagnosed with a chest X-ray, CT scan of the heart, or an electrocardiogram (EKG).
