The mist-covered mountains that make up the Carpathians have long guarded their secrets. Bran Castle, the famous stone castle that inspired everyone’s fascination with the character of Count Dracula.

Over the years, the Roman attraction has served as an important bridge between the medieval past and Gothic fantasy. The castle is now entering a new modern era of international tourism. It’s a move that links the King of Rock and Roll with the King of Vampires. American businessman Joel Weinshanker and his company Ad Populum bought a significant stake in Citadel’s operations. This is a major change in the way one of Europe’s most iconic heritage sites is shared with the rest of the world.Ad Populum, known for overseeing popular brands such as Graceland as well as the entertaining Chia Pet, now owns an 80 per cent stake in the company that runs the day-to-day operations of the castle. The castle’s impressive stone walls and towers are still owned by the Habsburg family, descendants of Princess Ileana, and the heart of the castle’s operation is under American administration. The goal is clear: the goal is to make Bran Castle a top international tourist attraction, attracting greater numbers of visitors across the United States and Western Europe towards central Transylvania.

A legacy that goes beyond the vampire mythAlthough the public knows Bran Castle through the lens of Bram Stoker’s epic novel, the real story of the castle is its extensive network of royal residences and military defence. Stoker himself never set foot in Romania and relied instead on vivid descriptions and photographs from British libraries. The sharp silhouette of the castle was perfectly in keeping with the eerie atmosphere in his book.

This fusion of fantasy and real life has made this castle a thriving center for dark tourism. The appeal of these sites could be more than just the result of a temporary trend. Humans’ fascination with the apocalyptic usually stems from the need to connect with history in a tangible and enjoyable way. Bran Castle has mastered this balance and offers visitors a peek into the brutal reign of Vlad the Impaler, as well as the magnificent chambers used by Queen Mary of Romania. The new administration will oversee the castle. The castle could undergo a makeover of the experience for visitors. Reports indicate that Ad Populum has already begun a massive recruitment campaign. They are looking for new people to take on everything from immersive tours to events to managing the logistics of ticket sales and maintenance. This is no easy task, considering that the castle hosted more than a million guests in 2024.

It also achieved unprecedented profits of about $7 million, as revealed by El País newspaper.

Integrating popular culture with historic preservationThe collaboration between Habsburg descendants and Weinshanker is a perfect marriage of the old world and modern brand management. A spokesperson for Ad Populum confirmed that the family is committed to their position as stewards of the iconography. By partnering with someone who has transformed Graceland into a world-class pilgrimage destination, the family’s goal is to protect the integrity of the castle as well as ensure its financial viability for the next generation. The leadership change comes after a long period of legal uncertainty. The American Arbitration Court recently settled a case involving the former management company, concluding a full transfer to Princess Ileana’s descendants. The legal clarity in this case made it clear that Weinshanker could take charge. The modern-day visitor can expect a harmonious blend of the historical and the legendary. It is possible to walk along the small, winding stairs that Vlad the Impaler may have traversed, and visit the beautifully decorated, art-filled rooms in which Queen Mary found solace. This duality, the tale of the bloodthirsty Dracula, as well as the peaceful reality of the Romanian royal family, makes Bran Castle a special place in everyone’s imagination.

When the doors open with this brand-new American partnership, the story of the Carpathians is primed for a larger audience, and the gloom of Transylvania is guaranteed to remain captivating for a long time to come.
