Student recounts being denied an F1 visa interview. Redditors point out the error.
Getting a US visa approved at a consulate office after a 10-minute interview can be difficult. Officers may not give an explicit reason for the denial, leaving applicants even more confused about what they said was wrong.
One student took to Reddit, where he narrated his interview experience at the Mumbai Consulate, which ended in rejection but the same happened to many who reported to a particular office.Do you feel any harm or racism in this country? This was the first question asked by the visa officer, and that country is India. Often times, people come to the United States on an F1 visa but then apply for asylum due to racism and persecution in their home country.
The Redditor’s answer to this question was “no,” which was true in this case as the Redditor has expressed no intention of settling in the United States. The Redditor was then asked about Michigan Technological University and why she chose to pursue a master’s degree in biomedical engineering. “Michigan Tech is an R1-rated research university that offers hands-on training in medical devices,” the Redditor said.
The visa officer asked which other universities the student had applied to.“Johns Hopkins University, Rensselaer Polytechnic University, University of Maryland, Michigan Tech University, Yale University,” was the answer. The visa officer said: “I’m sorry but I can’t offer you a visa to the United States today…”Social media users were quick to figure out what went wrong with the Redditor. It was a choice of universities. They noted that the selection of the five universities ranged from Tier 1 to Tier 3 universities in the US, which may have given the visa officer the sense that the Redditor wanted to enter the US at any cost.Another pointed out that applicants to Yale and Johns Hopkins do not apply to Michigan Tech.
