Several killed in a fire at a construction site in Brussels
Reuters news agency reported, citing local authorities, that several people died after a fire broke out at a large construction site in central Brussels on Tuesday, while rescue teams continued to search for six workers who were still missing. The fire broke out at a large renovation project in Broker Square, where more than 200 workers were present at the time. Three people were taken to hospital, while authorities said an unspecified number of bodies were discovered inside one of the two elevator entrances at the site.Reuters quoted elevator spokesman Brecht Speibroek as saying: “We had a small entrance to one of the elevator’s two closets, and there we saw that there were some bodies of two or three people who had died.” Spybrook said that six workers were still missing, adding that the cause of the fire was not yet known. According to the local fire brigade, the initial fire in the basements was brought under control relatively quickly. However, the flames spread through the elevator shafts, starting a second fire in an underground section of the building and complicating rescue efforts. Emergency crews continued search operations, while investigators worked to determine the causes of the accident.
