Investigators say a 20-year-old man accused of trying to kill OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was carrying a list of other AI executives and investors while the FBI raided his Texas home.Federal agents searched the suspect’s home in Spring, Texas, on Monday. Authorities identified him as Daniel Moreno Gama, who is accused of traveling to San Francisco to carry out a planned attack motivated by anti-AI views.According to sources cited by the New York Post, Moreno Gama had a statement at the time of his arrest. The document is described as a “three-part series” and is said to include the names of other AI executives and investors.Police say the incident began Friday morning when Moreno Gama threw a Molotov cocktail (incendiary device) into Altman’s home, setting the front gate on fire. No one was injured. He then went to OpenAI headquarters, where he was seen on surveillance footage throwing a chair through the building’s glass doors. Security staff told police he intended to burn the building down and kill anyone inside. He was arrested outside the building by San Francisco police.
He was found carrying a jug of kerosene and a lighter at that time. The FBI charged Moreno Gama with attempted damage and destruction of property using explosives and possession of an unregistered firearm. He also faces multiple state charges, including attempted murder.San Francisco District Attorney Brock Jenkins said the attack was “premeditated, premeditated and premeditated,” adding that authorities view it as a direct attempt on Altman’s life.
Additional charges have been filed in connection with the incident at OpenAI’s offices, including attempted criminal threatening and attempted arson. The FBI said the suspect’s actions were not spontaneous and were a “planned” and targeted attack that included an escape plan.Altman responded to the incident on his blog, posting a photo of his family and writing, “I love them more than anything,” and, “Normally we try to be fairly private, but in this case I’m sharing a photo in hopes that it will discourage the next person from throwing a Molotov cocktail at our house, regardless of what they think of me.”
