‘Melt them down and fill in the potholes’: Reform UK candidate who made remarks against Nigerians wins key seat in EnglandGlenn Gibbins, elected from the Hilton Castle ward, is facing heavy criticism after a series of now-deleted posts appeared online following the local election results. In one post from March 2024, Gibbins allegedly wrote: “Can’t believe the number of Nigerians in town… should melt them all down and fill the gaps!!”

The remark sparked widespread outrage online, with critics calling it racist and demanding that the UK Corrections Authority be held to account over its selection of candidates.

Posts targeting Muslims and immigrants have resurfaced

Gibbins also allegedly made inflammatory comments about immigrants and Muslims in several other posts. In one post, he referred to boat migrants as “an army of Muslims who will turn on us over time,” while another wrote: “Our tolerance is the greatest weapon of Muslims.”The comments have intensified criticism of the Reform Party UK as the party continues to expand its presence in local councils across England.Aside from his statements on race and immigration, Gibbins has also drawn attention to comments targeting women in television and sports broadcasts.

TV presenters reportedly described Mel and Sue as “the fattest, most disgusting lesbian hosts ever”.During the 2021 rugby match between Ireland and Japan, he allegedly complained to a female commentator, who wrote: “I hope they stick to cooking, sewing and housekeeping.”

Anger on social media after the election results

The resurfaced posts led to strong reactions to X, with users condemning the councilman’s comments and questioning how he was elected despite the controversy.“A vile racist has won a seat,” one user wrote, while others accused Reform UK of failing to properly vet candidates. This controversy comes at a time when the reform movement in the United Kingdom made sweeping gains in local council elections in England, with voters dealing a major setback to Prime Minister Keir Starmer and the Labor Party. The right-wing populist party expanded its presence in several councils at the expense of the Labor Party.
