US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he was pausing Project Freedom as Washington seeks to secure a broader agreement with Iran to end the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. He also cited requests from Pakistan and other countries for the move. This operation is an initiative supported by the US military that was launched just one day ago to escort and assist stranded commercial ships in exiting the Strait of Hormuz.Announcing the decision, Trump wrote: “At the request of Pakistan and other countries, and the tremendous military success we achieved during the campaign against the nation of Iran, as well as the fact that significant progress has been made toward reaching a full and final agreement with representatives of Iran, we have mutually agreed that while the blockade will remain in effect, Project Freedom (ship movement through the Strait of Hormuz) will be paused for a short period of time to see if it will happen.” The agreement can be completed and signed.
“
Despite the pause, the United States will continue its blockade of Iranian ports as part of efforts to pressure Tehran to reach an agreement to end the conflict that began after the US-Israeli strikes on February 28.
What is project freedom?
Trump announced “Project Freedom” as a US-led initiative to help commercial ships stuck in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important sea lanes, amid increasing hostilities. The plan aims to safely direct ships from countries not directly involved in the conflict out of the region, with US naval and air assets creating a protective corridor.
Trump had described it as a “humanitarian gesture” to help ships and their crews facing shortages of food and basic supplies, while ensuring that global trade flows are not severely disrupted. However, the operation also led to heightened tensions, with the US claiming to have sunk several Iranian boats accused of threatening shipping, while reports emerged of attacks on civilian ships in the area.Earlier today, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Washington had completed its offensive phase against Iran, known as “Operation Epic Fury.”“Operation Epic Fury has concluded, as the President informed Congress. We are done with that phase of it,” Rubio said.He added that American actions in the Strait were defensive: “This is not an offensive operation; this is a defensive operation… There is no shooting unless we shoot at us first.”Rubio said that the United States had achieved its war goals, but stressed that Washington still preferred a negotiated agreement with Iran, even as high tensions remained in the region.
