Pakistan launched cross-border strikes late Thursday night as part of Operation Ghazb-e-Haqq in response to what it described as “unprovoked firing” by the Afghan Taliban across multiple sectors.
The action came in the wake of alleged attacks on several Pakistani border posts, with senior ministers confirming that a large-scale counterattack was underway.

Pakistani Information Minister Atallah Tarar said that at least 133 Afghan Taliban members were killed and more than 200 wounded during the operation. Defense Minister Khawaja Asif stated that the armed forces were making a strong response to what he described as aggression from the Afghan Taliban.“Afghan Taliban defensive targets in Kabul, Paktia and Kandahar were targeted, with the possibility of further casualties,” Tarar said. He added that at least 27 sites of the Afghan Taliban regime were destroyed, and nine other sites were seized.

Operation Gaz-e-Haq is a Pakistani military retaliation campaign launched in response to alleged cross-border attacks. It translates to “righteous anger.”According to officials, the operation targeted major military installations and defensive positions belonging to the Afghan Taliban movement.

In response, the Afghan Ministry of National Defense said that 55 Pakistani soldiers were killed in retaliatory operations carried out along the Durand Line, the 2,611-kilometre border between the two countries that Afghanistan has never officially recognized.The ministry said in a press statement that the action began at eight o’clock in the evening on the ninth of Ramadan, corresponding to February 26, in response to what it described as the violation of Afghan territory by Pakistani military forces a few days ago.The statement said: “A few days ago, Pakistani military services, with great audacity, violated Afghan territory, penetrated our borders, and martyred women and children here.”The ministry said that Afghan forces targeted Pakistani military sites along the Durand Line near the provinces of Paktika, Paktia, Khost, Nangarhar, Kunar and Nuristan.She added that the operation, which lasted four hours, resulted in the destruction of two Pakistani military bases and 19 points, while soldiers fled from four other points. The ministry also claimed that an enemy tank was destroyed and a large military transport vehicle was seized.
