Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated Tariq Rahman after Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) clear victory in the parliamentary elections.

Pakistan has welcomed Bangladesh’s parliamentary election results, with the country’s top leadership congratulating Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chief Tariq Rahman. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said he warmly congratulated Rahman for leading the BNP to a resounding victory and congratulated the people of Bangladesh for the successful conduct of the elections.

“I look forward to working closely with the new Bangladesh leadership to further strengthen our historic, brotherly multilateral bilateral relationship and advance our shared goals of peace, stability and development in South Asia and beyond”.

Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari also congratulated Rahman and the people of Bangladesh on the peaceful elections, reaffirming Islamabad’s support for democratic partnership and sharing progress, writing, “President Asif Ali Zardari congratulated Tariq Rahman on BNP’s landslide victory and congratulated the people of Bangladesh on their successful, peaceful elections and supported Pakistan for a strong partnership for a strong partnership.”

The reactions came as Rahman-led BNP took a clear lead in the polls, the first since the 2024 student uprising that toppled the government of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

With counting almost over, the BNP and its allies have won 177 seats out of the 237 declared so far, leaving results for 62 seats. Jamaat-e-Islami and its allies won 53 constituencies. Follow live updates of Bangladesh election results here.

Earlier, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also issued a statement and congratulated the world. “I extend my warmest congratulations to Mr. Tariq Rahman for leading the BNP to a decisive victory in the Bangladesh parliamentary elections. This victory demonstrates the confidence of the people of Bangladesh in your leadership. India will continue to support a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our multifaceted relationship.”
