A massive four-alarm fire ravaged a Queens home on Monday, February 9, where one woman was killed and eight others were injured, the New York Post reported. Among the injured, a young man left fighting for his life, local authorities said.

The massive fire broke out on the first floor of a residential building on Dongan Avenue between Poyer Street and Broadway in Elmhurst around 6:44 p.m. FDNY Dr. A 34-year-old woman was pronounced dead in the fire, while a 22-year-old man was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, police said. Five other New Yorkers, as well as two firefighters, suffered minor injuries.

Firefighters worked until Monday evening to put out the fire. Several people were seen being taken to ambulances on stretchers as the fire spread.

Residents remember the incidentNeighbor Subhash Gurung told the New York Post that he was at work at the time of the fire. Her family panicked and called her as the fire spread to the side of her house and smoke started rising in their basement.

“My mom saw smoke coming from the basement, and she screamed. And that’s when all the people gathered and they called 911,” Gurung said.

“A cold night, it’s terrible, and my apartment is full of smoke. And they’re telling us they’re just going to tear everything down, and I think they’re going to look at my apartment,” he added. “So I have nowhere to go, I’m relying on my friend tonight.”

Caitlin Clark, a nearby resident, recalled smelling smoke. When he looked outside, he saw huge flames engulfing the house on his street.

“I was watching a show with my mom, I was opening a fruit, and then I thought, ‘Mom, do you smell that smoke?'” Clark said. “I stood up and ran to the door, and then at the end of the block there was smoke and flames.”

“I haven’t seen anything like this in a long time. It’s something I will look up in my history books,” he added.

It is not yet clear what caused the fire. The incident is under investigation.
