Former FBI agents have speculated about the motive for Guthrie’s kidnappingFormer FBI supervisory agent James Gagliano described the circumstances of Guthrie’s kidnapping as strange and noted that the “most compelling evidence so far” was a ransom message requesting a bitcoin payment, the Daily Mail reported.

Gagliano says there are two reasons for the abduction. “It’s either for profit or revenge,” he said.

Another former FBI agent, Lance Leasing, told Fox 10 that such motive-driven kidnappings are extremely rare, especially for a victim Guthrie’s age.

Leising said the ransom note did not serve the usual “ideological purpose” put out by media outlets.

Leising explained, “In most cases, a ransom note going to a media outlet is for an ideological purpose. You want to get your message out. This victim doesn’t scream like that. This is an 80-year-old grandmother.”

Gagliano said Guthrie’s kidnapping was “surprising and puzzling,” noting that nothing about the circumstances of the kidnapping and the ransom match “any conventional type of kidnapping.”

What have the authorities confirmed?Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos and the FBI continue to treat the disappearance as a possible abduction. But officials have not officially confirmed a motive.

Authorities suspect the 84-year-old was forcibly taken from her Tucson home. According to Leising, the house’s isolated location suggests a deliberate work that could take weeks to prepare. But according to the sheriff’s department, there is no reliable evidence to back up that hypothesis at this point.

Police have not confirmed or identified any prime suspects or persons of interest in Nancy Guthrie’s kidnapping.
