A Texas MAGA influencer said Indians describing their August 15 event as better than July 4 should not waste their time in the US and return to India.
A social media post by Indians in a private group in the Texas cities of Prosper and Celina has drawn the ire of American influencers. This time, some Indians are supporting them.
Texas has emerged as a hotbed of Indian hatred in the past few months. City Council meetings broke out over the issue of Indian residents. Video clips of Indians dancing and performing their rituals spread. While most of this was seen as targeting of the Indian population for their social media views, this time the malice of the powerful was not seen as unjustified.“Clear your calendars as we celebrate India’s Independence Day in Frisco.
Much better than American Independence Day,” read a flyer posted in Prosper and Selina’s private (uncensored) Facebook group.
Influencer Kylie Campbell said she had nothing to say about the event and flyer, but the statement that it was much better than US Independence Day was unwarranted. “If you’re coming to America and you’re going to have your little festivals or celebrations and then say it’s better than one holiday that celebrates the country you live in, then maybe you just need to go back to where you came from,” she said.
“And I know that sounds harsh. But at the end of the day, this is a clear example of the opposite of assimilation, which is the only thing we’re asking these people to do. Am I lumping everyone in the community into this? No. But things like this are why people get frustrated,” he said, adding that foreigners in the United States can’t flee their country and then tell Americans that their culture and vacations are better.
Reaction to anger
There was no divided opinion as Indian Americans also condemned the post on social media. One wrote: “I am an Indian and I completely agree that it is the wrong way to say it is better than the USA. I am forever grateful that the USA has given me the opportunity to live here legally. I have the utmost respect for every American citizen.”
