The security operation in the state comes at a time when the country’s government is increasing pressure on the cartels in the wake of threats of American intervention. The operation also sparked a wave of violence, with cars burned and gunmen blocking highways in more than six states.

Washington welcomed the killing of El Mencho, with US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau saying that Oseguera’s death represents a “great development” for the United States and Mexico, as well as Latin America.

Meanwhile, the US State Department issued a “shelter in place” advisory for its citizens in parts of Mexico amid criminal activity and affray.

The Mexican military killed the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, “El Mencho,” on Sunday, throwing one of Mexico’s most powerful cartels into disarray.

El Mencho was injured while security forces attempted to arrest him in Tapala, Jalisco, on Sunday, and died while being airlifted to Mexico City.

During the operation, security forces came under fire, killing four people at the site. Three other people, including Oseguera, were injured and later died.

The killing of El Mencho led to several hours of roadblocks and the burning of cars in Jalisco and other states. Cartels usually use this tactic to prevent military operations.
