Meet Rini Sampath: An Indian-born candidate becomes the first South Asian candidate to enter the mayoral race of Washington, D.C.

Rini Sampath, an Indian-origin professional, made history when she became the first South Asian candidate to secure a spot on the ballot for Mayor of Washington, D.C.Sampath was born in Theni in Tamil Nadu. She moved to the United States at the age of seven with her family.

She has lived in Washington, D.C., for over a decade and currently works as a government contractor.

Her entry into the 2026 mayoral race comes as the city prepares for a competitive election scheduled for Nov. 3, with the party primary set for June 16.Sampath, 31, is running as a Democratic candidate and has positioned herself as a political outsider. She has stated that she does not have the support of special interest groups and wants to focus on improving the city’s basic governance.

Her campaign revolves around the theme of “Fixing the Basics,” which focuses on everyday civic issues that affect residents. Her priorities include fixing roads, addressing wastewater problems in the Potomac River, lowering the cost of living and improving response times to emergency situations such as 911 services. She said the city administration has struggled to provide basic services and that there is a need to focus on core responsibilities.

To qualify for the ballot, Sampath’s campaign collected more than 4,500 signatures, showing early support for her candidacy. She called her candidacy a personal milestone and a broader moment for representation, noting that South Asians contribute greatly to American society but remain underrepresented in government. Her campaign cites her work in public service and government roles, where she was involved in improving city programs and services for residents.

She has said that not coming from a traditional political background allows her to deal with administrative issues in a more practical and direct way.The Washington, D.C., mayoral race is largely dominated by the Democratic Party, and the primaries are expected to play a major role in determining the eventual winner. Sampath is running against several candidates, two of the most notable being Janez Lewis George, a councilwoman known for her progressive platform, and Kenya McDuffie, an experienced political leader with strong citywide recognition.

Both are considered top contenders in the mayoral race.
