STRASBOURG: Millions of euros worth of jewelry was stolen in a robbery at the museum of French luxury glass maker Lalique on Sunday, the company and a source in the investigation said.The source close to the investigation said that the thief or thieves broke into the museum in Wingen-sur-Moder in northeastern France at around 5:30 a.m. local time and went directly to the jewelry room.
The source said: “About twenty pieces of jewelry were stolen. The loss is being assessed but could amount to several million euros, and is likely closer to four million.” The museum said it would be closed for several days.The source added: “An alarm went off, but by the time the security company finished its checks, it was the cleaning lady who first arrived at the scene and called the police.” Dedicated to the Art Nouveau and Art Deco jeweler and glassmaker René Lalique, the museum opened in 2011.
