A suicide bomber blew himself up at a Shia mosque during Friday prayers in Pakistan’s capital, killing at least 31 people and injuring 169, police sources said.
A powerful explosion occurred at Tarlai Imambarga in the Shehzad Town area of the federal capital.
The suicide bomber was stopped at Imambarga’s gate, but he blew himself up, killing 31 people and injuring scores, they said.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the blast.
However, police sources said the attacker was a foreign national linked to Fitna Al Khwarazee, a term used for Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Rescue teams and police rushed to the spot and started rescue operation.
A state of emergency was declared in the capital’s hospitals to deal with the situation as the injured were shifted to hospitals.

The attack comes three months after a suicide bomber killed 12 people in an explosion outside the District and Sessions Court building in Islamabad.
The attack took place today when the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev was visiting Pakistan. He arrived on Thursday for a two-day state visit.
President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Leader of the Senate Opposition Allama Raja Nasir Abbas condemned the attack.
“Targeting innocent civilians is a crime against humanity,” Mr Zardari said.
Pakistan condemns the attack
Strongly condemning the attack, Mr. Abbas said targeting places of worship was a direct attack on humanity, religion and social values, which could not be tolerated under any circumstances.
According to police officials, the nature of the blast is being investigated, but the blast appears to be a suicide attack.
Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhary visited the Pakistan Institute of Medical Science (PIMS) hospital in Islamabad and met the injured.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhary strongly condemned the attack in a post on social media platform X, lamenting the loss of life in an “act of cowardice”.
“Such acts of terror cannot dampen the morale of the nation. It is the need of the hour for all of us to stand united and express solidarity with law enforcement agencies for peace, tolerance and stability,” the minister stressed.
Mr. Chaudhary hails from Islamabad and belongs to the blast area.
