Operations continue at Cancun International Airport, but widespread delays and cancellations have left hundreds of travelers stranded and scrambling to rearrange their plans. The disruptions also affected Benito Juarez International Airport, adding to travel chaos through two of Mexico’s busiest airports.

According to Rolling Out, a total of 62 delays and 29 cancellations were recorded at the two airports. The city of Cancun was the worst affected, with 40 flights delayed and 23 cancelled, while Mexico City reported 22 delays and six cancellations.
The disruption comes during one of the busiest travel periods of the year, creating ripple effects for international tourists, business travelers and domestic passengers.
Major airlines were affected
Multiple transport companies operating on domestic and international routes were affected. Rolling Out reports that Aeroméxico saw three cancellations and 10 delays. American Airlines recorded one cancellation and two delays, while Volaris recorded six delays. Avianca and Delta Airlines also reported delays.

Travelers at both airports reported long lines, long waits and confusion as airlines worked to realign schedules.
For travelers with tight connections, delays of several hours can result in missed flights, lost hotel reservations and unexpected expenses.
The city of Cancun, which received more than 29 million visitors last year, is an important gateway linking North America and Europe with Mexico’s coast on the Caribbean Sea. Even minor disturbances can spread quickly through airline rotation schedules and crew assignments.
Why did the unrest occur?
Aviation authorities and travel reports cite several contributing factors, including higher passenger numbers, operational pressures on airlines, crew availability, and weather-related disruptions.

As Travel and Tour World points out, the burden of rerouting planes and assisting passengers falls largely on airlines and airport operations teams when delays pile up.
What travelers should do now
Passengers heading to either airport are advised to check flight status through the official airport portals or airline apps before departing for the terminal. Mexican passenger rights regulations generally give travelers the ability to rebook or receive refunds for canceled flights, and passengers are encouraged to speak directly with airline representatives about their options.
While airports remain open, ongoing disruptions mean travelers should expect delays and allow extra time as operations stabilize.
