Tehran: Iranian chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf said on Sunday that Tehran will not agree to any agreement with the United States that does not guarantee the rights of Iranians.“We will not agree to any agreement until we are sure that the rights of the Iranian people are respected,” Ghalibaf said in a video broadcast on state television. He added that Iranian negotiators “do not trust the enemy’s words or his promises.”His statements came as Iran and Washington continue to exchange proposals regarding a framework for an agreement to end the war that broke out on February 28 and has swept the Middle East.Media outlets such as the New York Times and Axios reported on Saturday that US President Donald Trump had sent Tehran a new framework for Iran to consider with “tougher” conditions. It was not immediately clear what that entailed.Iran considers easing sanctions and releasing its frozen assets in banks abroad among its basic rights that must be guaranteed under any agreement with the United States.Since the outbreak of war, Iran has maintained tight control over the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy corridor, and views oversight of shipping through the waterway as being within its rights.
