The arrival of US naval forces in the Middle East has raised new concerns about direct confrontation with Iran. Tehran has warned that if attacked, it will respond with missile attacks on US bases, ships and allies, including Israel.

Iran ‘seriously’ talking to US, says Trump

Trump confirmed that talks between the two sides are ongoing, with the possibility of military action on the horizon.

Washington has deployed warships led by the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier off the coast of Iran. The move comes after Trump warned of intervention following Iran’s deadly crackdown on anti-government protests.

Amid tensions, Iran’s president issued fresh warnings

Pezeshkian said Saturday that a major conflict would harm both Iran and the United States.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has never wanted war and has never wanted it in any way, and it is firmly convinced that war will not be in the interests of Iran, the United States or the region,” he said during a call with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, according to Iran’s presidency.

Iran’s army chief, Amir Hatami, warned the US and Israel against any attack, saying his forces were “on full defensive and military readiness”.

“If the enemy makes a mistake, it will undoubtedly endanger his own security, the security of the region and the security of the Zionist regime,” Hatami was quoted as saying by state news agency IRNA.

What is the cause of the explosion in the port city of Iran in Washington-Tehran tension?

An explosion was reported Saturday due to a gas leak in a residential building in the southern Iranian port of Bandar Abbas on the Gulf coast, according to the local fire chief.

Other incidents were reported in different parts of the country on Saturday. Media outlets said these were not linked to any attacks or sabotage, even as tensions ran high after Trump’s renewed threat of military action.

US-Iran tensions

Tensions between Washington and Tehran have risen since Trump ordered a US aircraft carrier strike group to the Middle East and warned of possible action against Iran. His stated reasons ranged from seeking punishment of Iran’s leadership for its crackdown on protests to pushing for a new nuclear deal.

On Friday, Trump repeated his claim that he had convinced Iran’s leaders to stop massacring protesters. He said he believed Tehran was interested in reaching a deal to avoid future attacks.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi earlier said Iran was open to nuclear talks. He added that the country’s missiles and defense “will never be discussed”.

Iran protests

Iran has blamed the United States and Israel for the protests that began in late December over economic concerns and peaked on January 8 and 9. Authorities said the two countries called the peaceful protests “terrorist operations”. and called it a “riot”.

The US-based Human Rights Activist News Agency (HRANA) reported that it had confirmed 6,563 people had died during the protests. This includes 6,170 protesters and 124 children. The group said internet restrictions imposed on January 8 continue to limit the flow of information from within the country.

Activists accuse security forces of killing thousands and injuring many more by firing directly at protests, often with birdshot that can leave metal pellets in the body until it can be healthily extracted by a professional.

News agency AFP reported, but rights groups say authorities have raided hospitals for wounded people, suggesting they may have been involved in the protests. At least five doctors have already been arrested for treating them, according to the World Health Organization.
