what hope
Both sides have signaled they are willing to return to diplomacy with the West over Iran’s long-standing nuclear standoff. But Washington is pushing to expand the scope of the talks. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Wednesday the U.S. wants talks to include Iran’s ballistic missile program, support for armed groups across the region and “treatment of its own people.”
Before the talks began, Araghchi posted on X, saying, “Iran enters diplomacy with open eyes and a steady memory of last year.”
“Promises need to be honored,” he wrote. “Equal status, mutual respect and mutual interest are not rhetoric, they must be the pillars of a sustainable agreement.”
Iran’s clerical leadership continues to worry that Trump may yet act on his previous threats to attack the country, especially after the US Navy increased its military presence near Iran.
In June, the United States joined the final phase of a 12-day Israeli bombing campaign to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities. Iran later said it had halted its uranium enrichment program.
