A Redditor asks if Rs 28LPA in Bengaluru is better than $60K per year in the US.
Obviously $60,000 per year is more than 28 INR, but salary conversion can be misleading and the dollar option may not be profitable at all when taking US expenses into account.
One F-1 student explained a confusing situation he faced in that he had two job options: a $28LPA job in Bengaluru, India, and a $60,000 a year job in the United States that he had been doing for the past four months. The Redditor explained that he came to the United States to obtain a master’s degree and got a job only four months ago after struggling for a year. But he was selected for an H-1B award this year and is in the process. On the one hand, he is lucky enough to get an H-1B but his salary is not very high in the United States. The Redditor said he always wanted to return to India and return to the US at a later stage. He explained his current status as a STEM student and added that he was afraid of getting stuck in the H-1B ring. The post went viral because it reflects two crucial things: the fear of H-1B among Indians after several rule changes by the Donald Trump administration, as well as the job market in the US where $60,000 a year in the US is very low, social media users opined – though many claimed it was justified as the location was not Silicon Valley or New York – but Philadelphia.
Most of the responses were in favor of 28LPA in Bengaluru as the cost of living in Philadelphia is still higher. One said: “60k in Philly is poverty level. You need at least 110-150k. I will choose Bangalore and maybe come to US later since you have H1b.”Another said: “Go to India. 60,000 is poverty in the United States. 28,000 is generosity in India.” “No need to think about 28LPA India. Unless you have a good trajectory/confidence, you can reach 100k+ in the next year or so in the US,” a third user wrote. But some Redditors asked the student to give more time to the US as the Rs 28LPA job offer will come from India again.
