An Indian-origin doctor shared her experience of obtaining a driving license in the UK and described the process as more stringent compared to India.Sunita Sayamagaru wrote in a post on X that although getting a driving license in India was relatively easy, the system in the UK requires a much higher level of skill and awareness. She said she already had an Indian driving license when she moved to the UK in 2007, but soon realized that her driving standards were not up to par.“I realized how pathetic my driving was,” she wrote, adding that she had not learned a large part of what is expected of UK drivers.
According to its publication, the licensing process in the UK includes a theory test and a practical test, where candidates are closely assessed on multiple aspects of driving. She described how examiners check mirror use, lane discipline, indicators, parking skills, speed control, and the ability to navigate complex roundabouts. On her first attempt, she failed the practical test. She said the examiner flagged a major error – failing to complete a full mirror and shoulder check before exiting at the roundabout – despite acceptable driving.“He told me that the rest of my driving was fine, and that he was being strict with me, but that it was for my own good,” she wrote.
She took the test again two weeks later and was assessed again by the same examiner, which she said made her nervous. However, on her second attempt, she succeeded.Sayamagaru also pointed out that many Indian drivers she knows have failed the UK test multiple times despite having years of driving experience in their home country.“It’s that strict,” she said.Despite the difficulty, she said such standards are necessary.“Driving license tests should be rigorous. This ensures the safety of self and others,” she wrote. Her post has since resonated with many users online, many of whom agreed that more stringent testing could lead to safer methods.
