Mitul Patel pleads guilty in Boston visa fraud case. He enlisted the help of “fake thief” Rambhai Patel to obtain a U visa.
Mitul Patel, 40, pleaded guilty in Boston, Massachusetts, to visa fraud, in which an organized gang staged a robbery so “victims” could apply for a U visa. Mitul Patel was one of the alleged victims.
The ruling in this case is scheduled to be issued on July 29. Ten others were previously charged in a criminal complaint in March 2026.The gang was led by Rambhai Patel who was convicted in May 2025. Mitul Patel paid Rambhai Patel so that he could participate as a “victim” in a staged armed robbery of a shop in Worcester in October 2023.According to court documents, Rambhai Patel and his co-conspirators prepared and carried out armed robberies of at least six liquor stores and fast food restaurants in Massachusetts and elsewhere — beginning in March 2024.
The shop owners and the “victims” were aware of the plot.
Fake robbery: how these events unfolded
During the staged robberies, the “thief” would allegedly threaten store employees and/or owners with an apparent firearm before taking cash from the register and fleeing, all of it having to happen in view of a surveillance camera. Otherwise, the footage is of no use as evidence. The employees and/or owners then allegedly waited five minutes or more for the “thief” to escape before calling the police to report the “crime.”
The “victims” allegedly paid Rambhai Patel money to participate in the scheme. In return, Rambhai Patel allegedly paid shopkeepers to use their stores in the staged robbery. The other 10 who received Rambhai Patel’s help to obtain a U visa were all living in the United States illegally.
