Indian-American Tina Shah stirs row after saying she is the ‘only Democrat who is pro-Israel’ in viral videoThe club reignited debate within the Progressive Party over the Gaza War and ongoing tensions in the Middle East including the conflict with Iran.Tina Shah is a physician and former White House advisor during the Obama administration. She is running in the Democratic primary for New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District. In the April 26 recording, she said she was a “pro-Israel candidate” and supported “unconditional aid” for Israel, adding that she was “the only candidate” in New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District election who supports Israel unconditionally.

The audio clip spread widely across social media platforms including X and TikTok, sparking strong reactions from both progressive activists and pro-Israel Democrats, and deepening divisions within the party over foreign policy. This comes at a time when the Ministry of Health in Gaza estimates that between 70,000 and 75,000 Palestinians have been killed since the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.Shah’s statements come at a time when the conflict between Israel and Gaza continues to spark political controversy in Washington, along with growing tensions between Israel and Iran.

The war in Gaza has raised international concern about civilian casualties and the humanitarian situation. The issue has become a major fault line within the Democratic Party. Progressive lawmakers such as Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have criticized US military aid to Israel and called for greater protection for civilians in Gaza. Sanders has called for restrictions on gun transfers, while Ocasio-Cortez has supported efforts like the Ban the Bomb Act.Meanwhile, other Democrats maintained strong support for Israel. John Fetterman has advocated for continued military aid and opposed an immediate ceasefire, while Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer also supported Israel while calling for increased humanitarian aid.
